Aorta scan is a test to screen for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Aneurysm is a condition where the lining of wall of the blood vessel is enlarged. Abdominal aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body. With age and other medical conditions like high blood pressure, the vessel wall thins and so is at risk of developing aneurysm. The AAA is a kind of aneurysm where the lining of abdominal aorta thins out and expands/enlarges. Usually the aneurysm is silent until it reaches certain size. After certain degree of enlargement, AAA can pose life threatening medical emergency. The aorta scan is painless and non-invasive procedure where you lie flat on your back.
